Andrew Sexton Essays - NervaAntonine Dynasty, Aurelii, Films

Andrew Sexton Core-100 Yandell 2-9-2017 Hero's Journey Analysis Maximus: The Journey of a True Hero Often in movies, novels and other stories, there are tales of a hero and all his adventures. This common use of story-telling is known as the hero's journey. The hero's journey was first created by a man named Christopher Vogler, who condensed the journey into twelve simple stages. In the movie Gladiator, the main character, Maximus, portrays this hero's journey and the twelve stages as he starts off as a general for the Roman Legion. However, not all tales completely follow the hero's journey exactly. The director of Gladiator, Ridley Scott, uses creative twists in the hero's journey to create a unique and different type of hero's journey. To summarize the film, Maximus is a general for the Roman Legion under the rule of Caesar Marcus Aurelias. The legion is faced by a long-standing war with Germania rebels. The legion quickly take care of the rebels and achieve victory. The caesar however, knows that will die soon, so he requests that Maximus be the next caser once he passes, but Maximus respectfully declines. Angered, because he was not loved by his father, Aurelia's' son Commodus, vengefully kills his father so that he would be named the next Caesar. Commodus asks Maximus for his allegiance, but once again, Maximus declines. Angered once again, Commodus sentences Maximus to be executed, as well as his family back home. Maximus escapes his sentence and flees back home, only to see his wife and son murdered, crisped, and hung. Maximus stays at his home, where later a slave caravan takes him in to test him out to be a gladiator. His owner, Proximal throws him into the gladiator ring, where Maximus and his comrades are victorious on multiple accounts. While Maximus continues to fight, the new Caesar, Commodus tries to make Rome great again, and he introduces games back into Rome. With Maximus' and his gladiator comrades' previous victories, Proximal takes them to Rome where they will fight in the big stage as gladiators. Ultimately, Proximal knows that Maximus is great fighter, and that with his help, he may be able to earn his freedom from fighting. In the gladiator's first fight in Rome, the warriors achieve victory in what was supposed to be certain death. Impressed, Commodus visits the winners, and is surprised to see Maximus as one of the warriors. Maximus then declares revenge on Commodus, but he cannot kill Maximus because the crowd loves the warrior and it would be considered political suicide. In the ring, Maximus continues to win fights, which angers Commodus greatly. Maximus also continues to plan his revenge, where he will escape from the gladiator keeps and kill Commodus, so that ther e may be proper reign in Rome again. With the help of Proximal and the rest of the fighters, Maximus escapes, but is shortly captured by the guards since Commodus had knowledge of his plans. Maximus is taken back in and is forced to have one last fight, but this time against Commodus. In his last fight in the ring, Commodus greets Maximus and tells him that he himself will fight Maximus, but in an unjust way. Commodus wounds Maximus shortly before their fight so that he could have the advantage. Maximus and Commodus fight to the death, where Maximus ends up killing Commodus, but also ends up dying due to his wounds. Once dead, Maximus ends up in the afterlife with his wife and son, his true home. Per Vogler, there are three different acts that the hero's journey partakes on. The first part of act one is the ordinary world. Per Vogler, the purpose of the ordinary world is to "take the hero out of the ordinary, mundane world and into a special world." This is not the case for the gladiator Maximus. To the common viewer, the ordinary world for Maximus is the real world, where Maximus is a general for the Roman Legion. However, after analysis of the movie, the viewer can conclude that the ordinary world to Maximus is not reality. This is the most important aspect to where Scott adds his own little twist to the hero's journey. Everything Maximus does in the

Art of Language essays

Art of Language essays Language is the blood of the soul... (Oliver Wendell Holmes) The blood flows through internal and external thought, giving the world insight into the human mind. Language can be found in many forms; including speech, expression, literature, and vocabulary. This art of language shapes the world in many ways. Language is a step beyond simple communication, allowing the mind to express thoughts, emotion, and intellect. It changes the way in which the world is understood and conformed. Ideas of different cultures spread throughout regions by both the written and spoken word. An example is the US Constitution. Some countries have tried to imitate the government of America in order to better theirs. The values and morals have been communicated and shaped the world so that democracy is understood and replicated. Also, speeches have been appreciated so that people follow the advice given. Such an instance is the famous speech given by Kurt Vonnegut at MIT, Wear Sunscreen. Many high school seniors can directly relate to the wisdom portrayed and recite lines stating how to make the most out of life. One persons ideas changed the way that humans conduct themselves, and how they perceive the world. Music is a form of language and communication of the heart and soul. The tone and rhythm of songs open the mind to various emotions and thoughts. It can be portrayed through instrumental and vocal sounds. A note on a page is a universal language for all musicians. When lyrics are added, the entire comprehension of the music may be altered. One word may change the way that a song is interpreted and may also determine whether or not it is liked or disliked. A composer can address the way that a person feels about a certain event in life through the beats and words put together. The order that words and rhythms are put to song may also affect the interpretation by others. Communication in the fo ...

W1 BA541 Asign Behavior vs Communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

W1 BA541 Asign Behavior vs Communication - Essay Example ranch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment† (Dictionary.com Unabridged, n.d.). As such, it could be deduced that interactive technologies, in the context of organizations and customers, mean the field of discipline that uses continuous two-way exchange or sharing of information between customers and the organization, on matters pertaining to the products or services offered and purchased by the clientele. As indicated, the emergence of new interactive technologies; meaning, the use of digital media (â€Å"combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images, and sound, into a structured digital computerised environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes† (England & Finney, 2011, p. 2), is not sufficient to presume that a solid bond is established between customers and the organization. The mere existence of these diverse kinds of interactive technologies does not firmly confirm that customers are able to grasp what the organization offers – if these are not effectively communicated to them. create new processes that are oriented around the coordination of all these newly possible customer interactions. And they must ensure that the interactions themselves not only run efficiently but are effective at building more solid, profitable relationships with customers† (p. 193). The key element that would allegedly enhance the knowledge on their products and services being offered; as well as on the organization’s ability to address the customers’ needs, is through effective communication. It was thereby emphasized that â€Å"the enterprise has to integrate all of its customer-directed communication channels so that it can accurately identify each customer no matter how an individual customer or a customer company contacts the enterprise† (Peppers & Rogers, 2010, p. 193). Concurrently, communication alone is still not enough.

Global Warming Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5750 words

Global Warming - Essay Example Center of discussion in this paper is Global Warming as a constant problem. We have to turn off greenhouse gases now in order to avoid catastrophe in decades to come. If global temperatures rise by four degrees by century’s end, sea levels will rise five to six meters due to the melting of our polar ice caps. It’s time to connect the dots from those remote Arctic regions to our cities, towns, and backyards. Let’s consider what the future might look like if global warming continues unchecked. According to recent studies Americans rank climate change as the country’s most critical environmental problem. Current observations of global warming related data have solidified the speculation that it is positively an enhanced greenhouse effect that is causing the world to warm. The planet has experienced the biggest increase in surface temperature over the last century. Between 2003 and 2006, the Earth’s average surface temperature rose between 0.6 to 0.9 de grees Celsius; the last 50 years saw the temperature increase rate almost doubling. Sea levels have shown a rise of about 0.17 meters during the twentieth century. Low-lying coastal regions, with thick population, are especially susceptible to climate shifts, with the poorer countries and small island nations having the hardest time adapting. It has been estimated that by 2080, 13 to 88 million people around the world would lose their home to floods. This research will demonstrate that there are numerous opinions on the causes of climate change. Are they manmade or natural? Global warming is a convoluted subject. It’s easy to get confused by all the scientific arguments and conflicting claims. The purpose of this research is to attempt to get the scientific community to agree that global warming related variables can be combated more efficiently with better cooperation. Take politics, economics, greed, and self interests of various governments out of the debate and merely foc us on the facts, and labeling the problem whatever you desire, can and will support worldwide comprehensive improvements. Problem Statement: Global Warming is a constant problem. Rationale for the Research: This is an issue that is approached very differently by the scientific community. This topic could affect all living organisms, the environment not just in the United States, but the entire world. From 2003 to

How does Shakespeare present conflict at the start of Romeo and Juliet Essay Example for Free

How does Shakespeare present conflict at the start of Romeo and Juliet Essay Explain how Shakespeare presents the theme of violence in this part of the play. The first thing to note about this scene is that it takes place right at the start of the play. I think that this scene exists to set up and highlight one of the key conflicts in the play as a whole. It takes place after a serious fight between the Montagues and Capulets. This fight’s prime instigator is Tybalt who when asked by Benvollio to help him keep the peace says: â€Å"What drawn and talk of peace. I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee: Have at thee, coward!† Clearly then this is a deep seated conflict that is responsible for disturbing the peace in Verona and it is the Prince’s job to restore order in this scene. Therefore right at the start of the scene he calls them ‘profaners’. This is very emotive language and helps to underline the Prince’s contempt for both of the families and their conflict. The audience when they hear language like this will then associate both families as being not being very religious and being opposed to God and His purposes. The contempt that the Prince and the audience is supposed to feel for both of the fighting families is further emphasised in the description of their swords as ‘neighbor-stained steel’. Clearly what the Prince is trying to highlight here is that both families are behaving in a very selfish immature way and are showing an unchristian regard for their neighbours. Therefore violence is shown in this scene as being something that is pointless, stupid and going against God. Following on from this the theme of violence is further emphasised through the Prince’s use of a rhetorical question: â€Å"Will they not hear?† I think that Shakespeare deliberately uses this technique here to demonstrate how unthinking both families are in their hatred for each other. It is clear that the hatred between them runs so deep that they cannot and will not listen to people who are trying to mediate between them and trying to keep the peace. This is further emphasised later on in the line by the Prince describing them as ‘beasts’. I think that Shakespeare deliberately uses this word to help emphasise just how nasty the violence between both families are. A beast is an animal. Therefore, to the Prince, the unthinking violence between them has gone so far as to take away their humanity. Again in the next line Shakespeare has further emphasised the Prince’s dislike and animosity towards both families and even how fed up he is with their constant quarrelling by using the emotive language of: â€Å"your pernicious rage’ This helps to underline that to the Prince it is both families’ actions that are having a harmful effect on his city and that they are gradually being very destructive through their actions. According to the Prince the only thing that will help to cool the men’s emotions down and will stop all the violence is: â€Å"purple fountains issuing from your veins† What the Prince means here is that only by the men’s spilt blood will they calm down. This does not seem like an effective way to keep the peace and helps to show that for some reason violence has become a way of life for the people involved the quarrel. What is the cause of all this violence the audience would naturally ask at this point in the speech? It is clear that, according to the Prince, that the cause of most of the violence is merely an ‘airy word’. The connotations of ‘airy’ are something that is unsubstantial, something that is barely even there. Therefore the portrayal of violence in this part of the play by Shakespeare is of actions that don’t have a cause, that are incre4dibly harmful and don’t seem to be about anything much in particular. Surely then we as the audience will slightly sympathise with the Prince and his role to help keep the peace. This can be seen later on in the play when Tybalt gets into a fight with Mercutio. One of the key moments in the play is when Tybalt says: â€Å"Mercutio thou consortst with Romeo† This could be seen as being just friendly ‘banter’ however to both families it is seemingly jokey things people say to each other take on huge significance. For me then these ‘airy words’ have a huge impact because the strong sense of pride these characters have and how they are unable to let things slide. I think this helps to underline what I think is the big lesson that Shakespeare is trying to teach us about violence in the play and that is that is that violence is often seen by people who are not taking part or who are innocent bystanders as being pointless and damaging.

Current Perspectives on Dual-Career Families :: essays research papers

â€Å"Current Perspectives on Dual-Career Families†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the essay entitled â€Å"Current Perspectives on Dual-Career Families† written by Lucia Albino Gilbert. It talks about how the children of dual-career families are effect and the gender roles are change in a dual-career family. In a dual-career family, both the mother and the father work full time jobs.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In this case study it showed the children of dual-career families are the same in other school aged children that come from a â€Å"traditional† family setting. A traditional family is when the mother stays home and watches the children, as the father goes to work and supports the whole family. Families of dual-career often enlisted the use of other care providers like day cares while they worked. These families also planned more time on the nights and weekends to spend with their children then the â€Å"traditional† family.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This study showed how the gender roles become more alike but also how the stay different in some way. At first the women’s roles were changing and the men’s roles were staying the same. Women in dual-career families, who worked full time also kept up with the traditional responsibilities. The women deal with the stress very well. Women benefited from having all this responsibilities like having increased self-esteem and better mental and physical health. After time, the wife and husband starting to both take on different roles. Men and women were having multiple roles. Eventually, the males started looking for jobs that held benefits of child care providers, and family absence days. They man starting taking more sick days in order to help sick children. Even though men still hold more power in the work force, the gender roles are started to fade.
